16 New Restaurants to Visit in KL & Selangor - August 2015

1. BRYCG New Orleans Cuisine in Ampang

Take a trip south of the Mason-Dixie line, down on the bayou: BRYCG (pronounced ‘bridge’)  New Orleans Cuisine tries to bring a bit of The Big Easy to Kuala Lumpur, serving up the vibrant flavours of Louisiana Creole cooking, plus a side helping of Tex-Mex favourites that stick more or less to a southern U.S. culinary theme. Laissez les bons temps rouler!
Address: 1 Jalan Nipah, Off Jalan Ampang

2. Lou Shang Café & Bar at Damansara Uptown

Upstairs is where the party’s at: Husband-&-wife team Manfred & Ai Peng presented their much-anticipated first-born to the world this week – a casual first-floor cocktail bar that hums with humour & heart, fulfilling Manfred’s yearning to run his own watering hole ever since he tended bar during his varsity years in Sydney. Try the tacos – Tex-Mex/East Asian musical chairs of ‘Canto-Pop,’ ‘J-Pop’ & ‘K-Pop’ with striking notes of kitchen-made char siu, miso-marinated sea bass &bulgogi beef.
Address: 10M, First Floor, Jalan SS21/58, Damansara Utama

3. Merchant’s Lane at Petaling Street

A former Petaling Street brothel, reincarnated as a crazy-atmospheric cafe, Merchant’s Lane seems poised to launch a thousand Instagram photos. One of the strongest contenders for the title of KL’s most beautiful cafe, blessed with an old-world charm that’s long been monopolised by Malacca, Ipoh & Penang.
Address: First Floor, 150, Jalan Petaling, Off Chinatown

4. W Café at Kota Damansara

Freshly roasted pork & fragrantly brewed coffee? A formidable partnership that forms the foundation of this new cafe.
Address: LG-4, Block C, Garden Office, Encorp Strand, Jalan PJU 5/1

5. Big Baba at Taman Desa

When Uncle Wee cooks, the sounds & smells that surface from his kitchen feel like home. “Sekejap, ya,” followed swiftly by “Panas! Panas!” as a steaming-hot bowl of aromatic pongteh chicken is carried out to the customer’s table at this new Nyonya restaurant.
Address: 34, Jalan 2/109E, Desa Business Park, Taman Bukit Desa

6. Der Backmeister at Taman Tun Dr Ismail

Cast a rye look at this new German bakery-cafe, helmed by a two-nation collaboration that includes Oliver Rollar (who has lived in Malaysia since 2000), Bobby, Chris & Steve, with the help of ‘Grandfather’ Klaus & Monica, who run their own bakeries back home in Cologne. For devotees of dense, dark breads, specialities span the likes of ‘sesamsemmel’ & ‘bauernbrot.
Address: 40, Persiaran Zaaba, TTDI

7. The Kobe at Ampang

The Kobe is raring to jazz up the city’s Japanese restaurant scene, with a ravishing poolside setting that might prove magical for moonlit meals & group gatherings. You should be able to rest easy in experienced hands here – the main kitchen is helmed by veteran chef Lum, who honed his craft for many years at Kampachi’s old outpost in Hotel Equatorial.
Address: 347, Jalan Ampang

8. Two Sons Bistro at Solaris Dutamas

Two Sons Bistro is a family affair, founded by married couple Stephen & Ida with a name that represents their two toddlers, Riley & Rylan. Don’t skip the steaks – Two Sons’ head chef was a senior member of the kitchen at Morton’s The Steakhouse in Singapore, so this place takes its aged Aussie beef seriously.
Address: A4-G2-8, Solaris Dutamas

9. Lobbee Thai Connection at Empire Damansara

Tucked on a secluded corner of Empire Damansara, this casual restaurant whips up fun fare to tempt fans of Thai flavours. The outlet is spearheaded by brothers Aiden & Adrian, seeking to recreate the food they love best from the Land of Smiles.
Address: LG-07 (below Ground Floor), Empire Damansara, Damansara Perdana

10. 46 By Project Gibraltar

With nothing but the number ’46’ inscribed over it, there could’ve been nearly anything behind this enigmatic entrance – a chic perfume store, a polygamy club’s headquarters, or even the passageway to an alternative universe. Turns out, it’s a desserts cafe & coffee bar whose cold, clinical look belies the welcoming warmth of its friendly founders.
Address: 46, Jalan USJ 9/5P, Subang Jaya

11. BWB Yakitori Bar at Desa Sri Hartamas

Check out this new spot for Japanese soul food on skewers & in bowls.
Address: 8, Jalan 27/70A, Desa Sri Hartamas

12. Charlie’s at Taman Desa

Charlie’s is a cheerfully likeable neighbourhood eatery with a social conscience, opened by Malaysian couple Sonny & Debra with a view to benefiting indigenous workers from Sabah & Sarawak as well as people who might not be able to afford a meal.

Pizzolo blends traditional flair with modern flourishes to hit harmonious notes for creative Italian cooking.

14. Toridoki at Desa Sri Hartamas

Toridoki scores points for sheer comprehensiveness – expect everything from signature skewers of chicken thigh & breast wrapped in skin to ‘seseri’ neck meat to juicy tail, cartilage, liver, gizzard & heart, ‘sasami’ tenderloin with plum to ‘tsukune’ meatballs & Nagoya-inspired ‘tebasaki’ crispy wings
Address: 40, Jalan 24/70A, Desa Sri Hartamas

15. Gaslight Café at Bukit Damansara

Talk about a throwback: Taking inspiration from the Greenwich Village coffee house that became a focal point for folk music in 1960s New York,Gaslight Cafe is an atmospheric new venue that seeks to capture the essence of the era when Bob Dylan first warned of battles outside ragin’ & old roads rapidly agin’.
Address: 15-2, Jalan Medan Setia 1, Plaza Damansara

16. The Hound at OUG

It’s definitely a dog-eat-dog world out there, but here inside The Hound, the innocent bliss of puppy love prevails.
